Meet the Plant

A North American Native

Canadian Fleabane belongs to the Asteraceae, or daisy, family. It grows as a tall, upright herb with narrow green leaves and clusters of tiny pale flower heads that eventually develop soft, silky seed tufts.

The plant readily grows in open, disturbed, or recently cleared ground. Although native to North America, Canadian Fleabane now grows in many other parts of the world.

Botanical Note

Two scientific names commonly appear: Erigeron canadensis and Conyza canadensis. Both refer to the same species.

What's in a Name?

Fleabane, Horseweed & an “Old Man”

Canadian Fleabane carries an unusually long list of common names, including Horseweed, Flea Wort, Coltstail, Prideweed, Frostweed, and Daisy Fleabane.

The genus name Erigeron comes from Greek words associated with “early” and “old man,” referring to the gray-white, hairlike pappus attached to the seeds that becomes noticeable soon after the flowers fade.

What Makes It Unique

The Story Behind the Bottle

Canadian Fleabane looks more like an ordinary roadside or meadow plant than an exotic essential-oil crop. That contrast forms part of its story.

Limonene

A naturally occurring aromatic constituent.

cis-Matricaria ester

Contributes to Canadian Fleabane's distinctive character.

trans-alpha-Bergamotene

Adds subtle depth to the aromatic profile.

Chemistry can vary with species, geography, plant part, and growing conditions. The name on the bottle matters. The botanical species matters. The source matters.

A Plant with a Long History

Traditional Botanical Context

Canadian Fleabane carries a long history of traditional plant use among Indigenous peoples of North America. Historical accounts describe different tribes using various parts of the whole plant in teas, lotions, steam preparations, and other traditional applications.

These historical practices involved the whole plant and do not automatically represent appropriate modern uses of concentrated essential oil. We share this respectfully as botanical and ethnobotanical context.

What About Pets?

Human essential-oil directions do not automatically translate to animals. Species, size, age, health status, concentration, route of exposure, and individual sensitivity all matter when considering essential oils around animals.

For animal-specific use, seek guidance from a veterinarian knowledgeable about essential oils.
