Are Your Cells Getting What They Need?
We hear a lot about vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, inflammation, energy, metabolism, and healthy aging. Depending on what you read—or what pops up in your social media feed—you might come away thinking you need a different supplement for every one of them!
Take this for energy. Take that for your bones. Add something else for your immune system. Don't forget your antioxidants. And apparently we all need to worry about our mitochondria now too. 😊
But here's the question I find much more interesting:
How do all of those things connect?
If you've spent any time with me, you probably already know where we're headed.
We're going to Connect the Dots™.
And this time, we're going all the way down to the cell.

Wait...Why Are We Talking About Cells?

When most of us think about nutrition, we think about the foods we eat or the supplements we take. We might look at a label and see vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, or any number of plant compounds.
But then what?
Where do those nutrients actually go, and what does the body do with them?
That's where this conversation gets fun.
Think about all the different systems in your body. Your brain communicates. Your muscles contract. Your immune system watches and responds. Your liver processes an astonishing number of substances. Your bones continually remodel themselves. Your digestive tract breaks food apart and helps move nutrients into circulation.
Those systems sound very different from one another, yet keep looking beneath the surface and eventually you find the same thing:
Cells doing their jobs.
And cells need raw materials to do those jobs.
Now we're getting somewhere.

Your Lunch Doesn't End at Your Stomach

I think we sometimes picture nutrition as though food travels into the stomach, the body somehow extracts the “good stuff,” and we're finished.
Not even close.
Digestion starts an incredible process of breaking food into smaller components that the body then absorbs and uses. Proteins provide amino acids. Fats provide fatty acids. Carbohydrates provide glucose and other substrates for energy pathways. Vitamins and minerals participate in biochemical reactions throughout the body.
So that lovely salad with chicken, blueberries, avocado, pumpkin seeds, and colorful vegetables doesn't simply fill your stomach.
You're delivering building materials.
And this helps explain something that often gets lost when we talk about individual nutrients: one nutrient rarely works alone.
Magnesium doesn't live in its own little magnesium department.
Vitamin C doesn't clock in, perform one job, and go home.
B vitamins don't hold a separate staff meeting on Tuesdays. 😊
Nutrients continually interact with enzymes, proteins, cell membranes, signaling pathways, and one another.
I like to think of nutrition less like a collection of solo performers and more like an orchestra. Each instrument contributes something different, but the music comes from how everything works together.

And Then We Meet the Mitochondria

Remember these from biology class?
Mitochondria usually get introduced as the “powerhouses of the cell,” and although that description oversimplifies what they do, it gives us a useful place to start.
Your mitochondria participate in turning nutrients from food into ATP—the usable energy that cells need to perform their work.
So when someone tells me, “I'm tired. What supplement gives me energy?” I want to look at the bigger picture.
Where does cellular energy actually come from?
What nutrients participate in those pathways?
What about sleep?
Blood sugar?
Movement?
Stress?
Hormones?
Now we've moved from “What can I take for energy?” to “What does my body need to produce and regulate energy well?”
That's a very different question.
And, in my opinion, a much more useful one.

What About Antioxidants?

Here's another word we hear everywhere: antioxidants. We know we're supposed to want them, we hear that colorful fruits and vegetables provide them, and we see the word splashed across supplement labels, but what does that actually mean when we bring the conversation back to our cells?
Our cells constantly carry out chemical reactions as part of normal metabolism, including the reactions involved in producing energy. Along the way, reactive molecules form, and our bodies rely on an intricate antioxidant defense system to help maintain balance. Nutrition contributes to that system, which gives us another reason to look beyond individual vitamins and start thinking about the variety of nutrients and plant compounds we provide day after day.
This becomes especially interesting when we start talking about plants. Green tea, turmeric, blueberries, grapes, herbs, spices, and deeply colored vegetables contain an amazing variety of naturally occurring compounds that researchers continue to study for their roles in cellular pathways. Rather than looking at one blueberry and thinking, “There's my antioxidant for the day,” I want us to appreciate the much bigger conversation happening between food, nutrients, plant compounds, and our own physiology.
Apparently our mothers really did know something when they told us to eat our vegetables. 😂

And What Changes As We Get Older?

This brings us naturally to healthy aging, because aging doesn't suddenly begin when we turn 50, 60, or 70. Our physiology continually adapts throughout life, and so do our nutritional needs, activity patterns, eating habits, hormones, muscle mass, bone remodeling, digestion, and energy demands.
At the same time, real life starts interfering with our wonderfully planned healthy diets. We may know exactly how we want to eat, but then comes the busy morning, the meeting that runs through lunch, the afternoon when we realize we've eaten very little protein, or the evening when we stare into the refrigerator and wonder how five different bottles of salad dressing somehow became dinner options. 😊
That's one reason I find the idea of nutrient sufficiency much more helpful than chasing the latest “super nutrient.” The goal doesn't involve cramming as many vitamins and supplements into the day as possible. Instead, I want to ask whether we're consistently giving the body enough of the basic nutritional materials it needs to carry out its work.
And notice the word consistently, because that changes the conversation.
One beautiful salad doesn't create lifelong wellness, just as one less-than-perfect dinner doesn't destroy it. Our cells live with the patterns we create over time, which means the repeated choices often matter much more than the occasional perfect—or decidedly imperfect—day.

Does More Nutrition Mean More Supplements?

Not necessarily, and this point matters.
When people first begin learning about nutrition, it becomes very easy to think, “If magnesium plays an important role, I need more magnesium. If vitamin D matters, I need more vitamin D. If antioxidants support normal cellular defenses, I need more antioxidants.”
Before long, we end up with a kitchen counter that looks like a small nutritional pharmacy.
But physiology rarely rewards the philosophy that if some works well, more automatically works better. Nutrients interact with one another, some compete for absorption, others work together, and individual needs vary according to diet, age, medications, health conditions, lifestyle, and many other factors.
That's why food continues to provide such an important foundation. When we eat a variety of nutrient-dense foods—quality protein, colorful plants, healthy fats, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables—we provide far more than isolated nutrients. We give the body an assortment of nutritional building blocks packaged together in ways that food naturally provides.
Thoughtful supplementation may then complement that foundation when appropriate, particularly when diet, lifestyle, age, individual needs, or nutritional gaps make additional support worth considering.
The goal doesn't involve seeing who can swallow the greatest number of capsules before breakfast. 😊 The goal involves giving our cells useful materials to work with.

Now Let's Connect Those Dots

Remember where we started? We talked about vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, inflammation, energy, metabolism, and healthy aging, and at first those topics may sound like completely separate wellness conversations.
Once we follow the physiology, however, the separation starts disappearing.
The foods we eat provide nutrients. Digestion and absorption make those nutrients available to the body. Cells use them in countless biochemical processes, including pathways involved in energy production, cellular structure, signaling, antioxidant defenses, tissue maintenance, and normal function. Those cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs communicate with one another as part of larger body systems.
Suddenly the conversation about “Which vitamin does what?” feels much too small.
A better question asks, “What nutritional environment am I creating for my cells every day?”
That doesn't mean every meal needs to look like it came from the cover of a nutrition magazine. It means we begin noticing patterns.
Maybe breakfast consistently lacks protein. Maybe vegetables appear at dinner but rarely during the rest of the day. Maybe we eat plenty of food but rotate through the same handful of choices, which limits nutritional variety. Maybe our schedule gets so busy that convenience gradually replaces foods we actually intended to eat.
None of those observations requires guilt. They simply give us information, and information gives us somewhere to begin.

So...Are Your Cells Getting What They Need?

I don't think any of us answers that question with a perfect yes every single day, and perfection doesn't need to become the goal.
Instead, start paying attention to what you repeatedly give your body to work with. Look at the variety on your plate, the quality and amount of protein you eat, the colorful plants that show up during the week, your sources of healthy fats, your hydration, and any thoughtful supplementation you choose to include.
Then ask yourself one more question:
What small change feels realistic enough that I might actually keep doing it?
That question matters far more to me than creating a spectacular wellness plan that lasts four days.
Because let's face it, most of us can pull off one impressive Tuesday when we drink the smoothie, eat the salad, take every supplement on schedule, exercise, drink all our water, turn off the computer early, and get into bed at a reasonable hour.
Some of us may even teach other people to do those things while sitting at the computer much too late at night. 😂
The real magic—if we want to call it that—comes from what we repeat.
A little more color on the plate, enough protein, better hydration, regular movement, restorative sleep, thoughtful nutritional support when appropriate, and then another day when we make many of those choices again.
That's why I keep coming back to a very simple idea:

NOURISH • SUPPORT • REPEAT

Our cells perform an extraordinary amount of work every day, so perhaps one of the most useful wellness questions we can ask doesn't involve the latest trend at all.
It simply asks:
What am I giving my cells to work with today?
