
A Simple Post-Work Ritual Your Horse May Learn to Love
After riding, I often notice that a horse tells us more during untacking than it did during the workout. One horse lowers its head and softens as I run my hands along the neck. Another tightens its back when I reach the saddle area. A third shifts away when I touch one hindquarter, even though it moved willingly under saddle.
Those small responses make me curious.
Did the horse work harder on one side? Did it compensate for uneven footing? Did the saddle create pressure? Did fatigue alter its movement? Does an area feel warmer, firmer, or more sensitive than it did before the ride?
A post-work liniment routine gives us more than a way to support tired muscles. It creates a few quiet minutes to run our hands over the horse, compare one side with the other, and notice changes before they grow into larger problems.
You can purchase many effective equine liniments, but you can also make a simple muscle wash or gel with carefully sourced essential oils and a clean base. The formula can remain uncomplicated. The value comes from what you apply, how you apply it, and what you notice along the way.
What Happens Inside a Working Muscle?
Muscles continually adjust to training. During exercise, contracting muscle fibers generate heat and consume oxygen and fuel. Blood flow increases, sweating supports cooling, and the nervous system coordinates thousands of small changes in balance and movement.
After work, the body begins shifting from performance toward recovery. Circulation continues carrying oxygen and nutrients into the tissues while moving metabolic byproducts away. The horse restores fluids, replenishes energy, and repairs the microscopic stress that naturally accompanies training.
A liniment cannot replace conditioning, hydration, nutrition, correct hoof balance, properly fitted tack, rest, or veterinary care. It can, however, become part of a thoughtful recovery routine that includes cooling, observation, touch, and gentle support.
Research strongly supports active cooling with cold water when a horse remains hot after exercise. In hot or humid conditions, repeated cold-water application helps horses dissipate heat safely and effectively. One study found that repeatedly pouring cold water over the horse’s lower body reduced post-exercise body temperature, while earlier controlled studies also found cold-water washing effective after strenuous work in heat. Janczarek et al., 2022 and Kohn et al., 1999.
This distinction matters. If the horse remains hot, cold water comes first. A warming liniment does not replace proper cooling.
Once the horse’s temperature, breathing, and heart rate move toward normal, a liniment wash or gentle massage may offer a useful transition into recovery.
Why Make Your Own Horse Liniment?
When you create your own liniment, you control the base, essential oils, concentration, batch size, and storage.
Some commercial products rely heavily on alcohol. Alcohol evaporates quickly and may create a cooling sensation, but repeated use can dry the skin or coat in sensitive horses. Other products contain fragrances, dyes, preservatives, or ingredients that you may prefer to avoid.
This does not mean every commercial liniment lacks value. It simply means that reading the label matters.
A homemade formula lets you choose a simple aloe gel, vegetable oil, witch hazel, or water-based wash according to your horse’s coat, skin, workload, and the way you plan to use the product.
The quality of every ingredient still matters. Adding carefully sourced essential oils to a heavily fragranced lotion or synthetic base changes the purpose of making your own formula in the first place.
Choosing the Right Base
The best base depends on how you want the liniment to behave.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera gel works well when you want a light topical application that spreads easily and does not leave the coat excessively oily. Choose a simple gel with minimal added fragrance, color, or unnecessary ingredients.
Aloe works especially well on clipped areas or when you want to massage a small amount directly over a muscle group.
Vegetable Oil
A pure vegetable carrier oil offers more glide for massage. It may fit clipped legs, shoulders, backs, and hindquarters, particularly when you plan to work slowly with your hands.
Because oil remains on the coat longer, begin with a small amount. Too much can attract dirt, create slipperiness, or leave the hair greasy.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel feels light and works well in a spray or wash. Commercial witch hazel products vary considerably. Some contain mostly water and alcohol with a relatively small amount of witch hazel distillate.
Read the ingredient list and choose a clean, properly distilled product from a source you trust.
Water
Water creates the simplest muscle wash. Since essential oils do not dissolve in water, they require dispersion before use. Mixing the oils into Epsom salts first helps distribute the droplets through the bucket when stirred, although it does not create a permanent emulsion.
Stir the wash again during use so the oils remain dispersed rather than collecting at the surface.
Why I Make Small Batches
Essential oils respond to light, heat, oxygen, and storage conditions. A mixture that sits in a warm tack room or trailer may change more quickly than a concentrated oil stored properly in a dark bottle.
Water-based preparations also lack the preservation systems found in professionally formulated products. For that reason, I prefer small batches.
Make enough spray or gel to use within a week or two, label it with the ingredients and date, and store it in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Discard it if the aroma, appearance, or texture changes.
A fresh formula gives you another advantage: you can adjust it according to the horse’s current workload rather than using the same mixture for every situation.
A Simple Epsom Salt Muscle Wash
This basic wash works as a carrier for whichever essential-oil combination fits your horse.
Base Liniment Recipe
- ½ to 1 cup Epsom salts
- Essential oils selected for your horse
- 1 bucket of water
Place the essential oils into the Epsom salts and mix them thoroughly. Dissolve the salt mixture in a small amount of water, then add it to the bucket and stir well.
This amount creates enough wash for approximately two horses, depending on how generously you apply it.
Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, carries a long history in soaking and topical preparations. Claims about large amounts of magnesium moving through intact skin remain debated, and equine-specific evidence remains limited. Its practical role in this recipe centers on helping disperse the oils and creating a pleasant mineral wash rather than correcting a nutritional magnesium deficiency. A review of transdermal magnesium research found that the evidence remained limited and inconsistent. Gröber et al., 2017.
That distinction allows us to appreciate a traditional tool without asking it to do more than the evidence supports.
Ortho Ease Muscle Wash
For a quick post-work wash, I often keep the recipe very simple.
Simple Horse Muscle Liniment
- ¼ to ½ capful Ortho Ease® Massage Oil
- ½ to 1 cup Epsom salts
- 1 bucket of water
Blend the Ortho Ease into the Epsom salts. Dissolve the mixture in a small amount of water, add it to the bucket, and stir well.
Apply the wash with a sponge while noticing how the horse responds over the neck, shoulders, back, hindquarters, and legs. Ortho Sport® Massage Oil may substitute for Ortho Ease.
The massage oil already contains a carrier, which helps create a gentler and more evenly distributed wash.
Essential-Oil Muscle Liniment Recipe
For a horse that finishes work with generalized muscle tightness, I may choose a more aromatic combination.
Sore Horse Muscle Liniment
- 20 drops wintergreen essential oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops juniper essential oil
- 5 drops ginger essential oil
- 2 drops jasmine essential oil
- ½ to 1 cup Epsom salts
- 1 bucket of water
Mix the oils into the Epsom salts. Dissolve the salt mixture in a little water, add it to the bucket, and stir thoroughly before and during use.
Lavender or ylang ylang may substitute for jasmine.
For a gel-based liniment, replace the Epsom salt and water with aloe vera gel. Begin with a smaller volume of essential oils when preparing a topical gel because the gel remains in concentrated contact with the skin rather than dispersing through an entire bucket.
Wintergreen contains methyl salicylate, a biologically active compound related to salicylates. Use it thoughtfully, avoid concentrated application, and do not apply the formula to broken, irritated, freshly abraded, or unusually sensitive skin. Avoid covering a strong liniment with a tight or occlusive bandage unless the product and application method specifically support bandaging.
Introduce any new formula to a small area first and observe the skin before applying it more broadly.
Warm Water or Cold Water?
The temperature of the wash changes its purpose.
Cold water fits a horse that remains hot after exercise or an area showing new heat or swelling. Controlled equine studies consistently support cold-water application for post-exercise heat removal. Marlin et al., 1998 and Janczarek et al., 2022.
Warm water may feel pleasant after the horse cools when the goal involves relaxation, comfort, and gentle cleansing of muscles that feel tired or stiff without acute heat or swelling.
Before choosing the bucket temperature, place your hands on the horse and ask what the tissues tell you.
Does the horse still feel hot across the chest, neck, or hindquarters? Does one tendon feel warmer than the matching tendon on the other leg? Do you notice swelling, pain, or a new response to touch?
A liniment routine begins with that examination—not with the recipe.
What Does the Research Say About Essential Oils and Horses?
Research on essential oils in horses continues to grow, although much of it focuses on behavior, stress, respiratory exposure, feeding, or skin conditions rather than muscle soreness specifically.
Well-Established Physiology
Essential-oil compounds can interact with the body through inhalation and topical exposure. Their small, lipid-soluble aromatic molecules allow them to cross biological membranes.
In one equine study, researchers applied a 10% lavender essential-oil preparation in vegetable oil to horses. Linalool appeared in the blood, peaked at approximately 20 minutes, and remained detectable during the study period. The horses also displayed lower heart rates and fewer behavioral indicators of stress during several challenges. Poutaraud et al., 2018.
This study did not test horse liniment or muscle recovery. It does, however, demonstrate an important principle: topical aromatic compounds do not simply sit on the hair. Application method and concentration matter because the body can interact with them.
Emerging Equine Research
Small equine studies suggest that lavender aroma may influence heart rate, heart-rate variability, cortisol, and observable stress behavior. A 2023 equine study also reported short-term changes in heart-rate variability following exposure to lavender and eucalyptus aromas, although the researchers noted the need for further investigation. Secrest et al., 2023.
These findings help us understand why a liniment ritual may influence more than the muscle underneath our hands. Aroma, touch, familiar handling, expectation, and the horse-human relationship may all contribute to the response.
The horse may experience the liniment through several pathways at once:
- Cooling or warming sensations on the skin
- Gentle pressure from massage
- Aromatic input through the olfactory system
- Increased attention to a tired area
- A familiar post-work routine
- A nervous-system shift as work ends
Research has not yet separated all these variables in horses. That leaves room for both curiosity and restraint.
Clinical Tradition and Observation
Horse owners, trainers, therapists, and veterinarians have used liniments, herbal washes, mineral soaks, massage oils, and aromatic preparations for generations.
That history counts as clinical tradition and accumulated observation, but it does not prove that every ingredient produces every claimed effect. It tells us where people repeatedly notice value and where more controlled research may prove useful.
A thoughtful practitioner keeps both forms of knowledge in view: what research documents and what careful observation continues to suggest.
The Most Valuable Part May Happen Before You Apply It
Before dipping the sponge into the bucket, run both hands over your horse.
Compare the left shoulder with the right. Follow the long back muscles on both sides of the spine. Feel the gluteal muscles, hamstrings, tendons, and lower legs. Notice temperature, texture, symmetry, and the horse’s response.
Then ask:
- Does one muscle feel firmer than its partner?
- Does the horse lower its head or brace?
- Does the skin twitch repeatedly in one area?
- Does the horse shift away when you touch one side?
- Do you notice heat, swelling, or a change from yesterday?
- Does soreness improve after several minutes, or does it intensify?
A horse may enjoy a liniment massage, but enjoyment does not rule out an underlying problem. Persistent pain, focal heat, swelling, lameness, reluctance to move, muscle fasciculations, dark urine, weakness, or a marked change in behavior calls for veterinary evaluation.
Liniment supports observation. It does not cover up the message.
Let Your Horse Participate
Just as I do with dogs and cats, I allow horses to respond to an aroma before applying it.
Open the bottle at a respectful distance and watch. Some horses lean forward and investigate. Some remain neutral. Others turn away, raise their head, tighten their muzzle, or step back.
That response gives us information.
A horse does not need to love every oil simply because we selected it with good intentions. Individual experience, memory, health, genetics, and sensitivity all influence the response.
When possible, let the horse participate in the conversation.
A Note for Competition Horses
Natural does not automatically mean competition-permitted.
Essential oils and liniment ingredients contain biologically active compounds, and competition rules change. Before using any topical product on a horse that competes, check the current rules for your governing organization and speak with your veterinarian.
The FEI updates its Equine Prohibited Substances List annually and offers an online database and mobile application for checking ingredients. Review the 2026 FEI Equine Prohibited Substances List. Keep a written record of every ingredient you apply, the concentration, the date, and the horse treated.
What About Raindrop Technique for Horses?
Raindrop Technique™ combines carefully selected essential oils with intentional application along the back and feet. Although the method first developed for people, trained practitioners also adapt elements of the approach for horses.
With horses, I view the technique as more than a sequence of oils. It creates a structured opportunity to observe posture, breathing, muscle tone, emotional response, and areas of sensitivity.
Some horses soften quickly. Others need more time, less stimulation, a different oil, or no oil at all that day.
Research has not established Raindrop Technique as a treatment for detoxification, musculoskeletal disease, or emotional disorders in horses. Those ideas currently fall under clinical tradition, practitioner observation, and individualized complementary care.
For me, the horse’s response remains central. The purpose never involves forcing a technique onto the animal. It involves listening more closely.
A Seven-Day Observation Experiment
For the next seven days, spend two minutes running your hands over your horse before and after work.
Do not begin by trying to change anything. Simply notice:
- Temperature
- Muscle texture
- Symmetry
- Skin movement
- Posture
- Breathing
- Willingness to receive touch
Record one or two sentences after each session. If you use a liniment, note the ingredients and where you applied it.
By the end of the week, you may begin seeing patterns that remain invisible when each ride stands alone.
A Thought to Carry Back to the Barn
A homemade horse liniment can feel wonderful, smell beautiful, and add a useful ritual to the recovery process. Yet the most valuable ingredient may not come from the bottle.
It may come from the few extra minutes we spend with our hands on the horse, noticing what changed.
