Your Body Keeps Time: Why Daily Rhythms Matter More Than You Think

Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time talking about hormones, blood sugar, sleep, digestion, mitochondria, inflammation, movement, and cellular health.
The more we look at them, the more obvious one thing becomes.
They don’t work separately.
They communicate with each other all day long.
And one of the things helping coordinate that communication comes down to something we often overlook:
time.
Not the clock on the wall.
Biological time.
Your body pays attention to light and darkness. It notices when you eat. It notices when you move. It notices when you rest. It notices when your day starts and when your day winds down.
That means wellness doesn’t only involve what we do.
When we do it matters too.
Once we understand that, a lot of other pieces begin to make more sense.

We Usually Think About Circadian Rhythm as Sleep

Most of us hear the words circadian rhythm and immediately think about bedtime.
That makes sense, because light, darkness, melatonin, and sleep all connect very closely.
But your circadian rhythm doesn’t suddenly turn on when you go to bed.
It influences physiology throughout the entire day.
Deep inside the brain sits a small area called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, often described as the body’s master clock. Light entering the eyes gives this clock important information about whether it’s daytime or nighttime.
But here’s where this gets more interesting.
The brain doesn’t contain the only clock.
Cells and tissues throughout the body also follow rhythmic patterns. The liver keeps time. The digestive system keeps time. The pancreas, muscles, immune system, and other tissues respond to their own daily signals.
Food provides one signal.
Movement provides another.
Light provides another.
Sleep and darkness provide another.
So when we talk about circadian health, we really talk about a whole network of clocks trying to stay coordinated.
That’s an important distinction.
The body doesn’t simply ask, “Did I sleep?”
It also asks, in a sense, “When did the day start? When did food arrive? When did activity occur? When did darkness come? When did the work of the day finally stop?”
That begins to explain why routine can influence us more than we sometimes realize.

The Rule of 8

When I teach this, I like to divide the day into four general windows.
Howard Gurney taught me the  Rule of 8.
This isn’t meant to create another rigid schedule that we need to follow perfectly.
Real life doesn’t work that way.
Instead, I use it as a way to visualize what the body generally tries to accomplish during different parts of the day.

6 AM–10 AM: Wake and Signal

Morning light matters.
When light reaches the eyes in the morning, it gives the brain information that the day started. Cortisol also follows a natural daily rhythm and generally rises around the waking period.
We hear so much negativity about cortisol that it’s easy to think we don’t want it.
We do.
Cortisol helps us wake up, mobilize energy, maintain blood pressure, and respond to the demands of the day.
The problem doesn’t come from cortisol simply existing.
The bigger conversation involves timing and regulation.
This makes the morning an important signaling period.
Natural light, hydration, nourishment, and movement all help reinforce the message that daytime activity started.
I’m not suggesting that everyone needs an elaborate morning routine.
Sometimes the simplest things matter.
Open the curtains.
Go outside.
Walk the dog.
Take your coffee onto the porch.
Let your eyes see morning light.
Move a little.
Give your body a recognizable beginning to the day.

10 AM–6 PM: Build and Do

For most people, this portion of the day carries much of our activity.
We work, think, eat, solve problems, move around, digest food, interact with people, and use energy.
This also brings us into the relationship between circadian rhythm and metabolism.
Blood sugar regulation doesn’t operate in isolation.
Neither does insulin.
Neither do mitochondria.
They all respond to the broader environment in the body.
Sleep from the night before matters.
Stress matters.
Movement matters.
Meal timing matters.
How long we sit matters.
That doesn’t mean one late lunch or one sedentary afternoon ruins anything.
I’m much more interested in patterns.
What does the body experience over and over again?
That’s where the signals begin adding up.
For example, we often think about a meal only in terms of what it contains.
Protein.
Carbohydrates.
Fat.
Fiber.
All important.
But we can also ask:
What time did I eat?
How long did I go between meals?
Did I move afterward?
Was I already exhausted when I ate?
Did I eat dinner and then continue snacking until bedtime?
Those questions give us more information.
They help us connect the dots instead of isolating one nutrient or one number.

6 PM–10 PM: Shift and Settle

This may represent one of the most important transitions of the day.
And I think many of us skip it.
We stay stimulated until the moment we decide we need to sleep.
Television.
Phones.
Work.
Emails.
Bright lights.
News.
Problem solving.
Then we get into bed and expect the nervous system to immediately understand that the day ended.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
The evening gives us an opportunity to begin shifting.
Not necessarily through some perfect bedtime ritual, but through quieter signals.
Dimmer light.
Less work.
A warm bath.
A book.
Prayer.
A conversation.
Stretching.
Preparing for tomorrow.
Simply lowering the amount of stimulation around us can help tell the body that the active part of the day now winds down.
I think of this period as the bridge between daytime physiology and nighttime physiology.
That bridge matters.

10 PM–6 AM: Repair and Reset

Sleep doesn’t mean the body stops working.
It changes jobs.
During sleep, the body continues regulating hormones, processing memories, supporting immune function, repairing tissues, balancing metabolic activity, and performing cellular maintenance.
The brain also increases certain waste-clearance processes during sleep.
That gives us a very different way to think about nighttime.
Sleep isn’t simply the absence of activity.
It represents a different kind of activity.
Daytime focuses more heavily on engaging with the outside world.
Nighttime gives the body more opportunity to turn inward toward restoration, repair, and organization.
That’s why I don’t like treating sleep as the thing we squeeze into whatever time remains after everything else gets done.
It plays a role in the physiology we want the next day.

Blood Sugar Also Follows Rhythm

We often talk about glucose from the perspective of food.
And of course food matters.
But glucose regulation also connects with sleep, stress, physical activity, hormones, and circadian timing.
Insulin sensitivity can vary across the day.
A poor night of sleep can also influence glucose regulation the next day.
Now we start seeing why the question, “What did you eat?” doesn’t always give us the whole answer.
Maybe we also ask:
How did you sleep?
When did you eat?
Did you move?
How stressed did you feel?
Did your day contain any rhythm at all?
This doesn’t make nutrition less important.
It makes nutrition part of a larger picture.

Your Digestive System Keeps Time Too

The gut also follows daily rhythms.
Digestion changes throughout the day. Gut motility changes. The microbiome also responds to feeding and fasting patterns.
That doesn’t mean everyone needs an aggressive fasting program.
I tend to start much more simply.
Does the digestive system ever get a break?
For some people, simply creating a reasonable overnight period between dinner and breakfast gives the digestive system a predictable period without food constantly arriving.
Again, we don’t need to turn this into another extreme wellness rule.
The body often responds remarkably well to consistency.

Mitochondria Belong in This Conversation Too

You know I can’t talk very long about energy without eventually talking about mitochondria.
Mitochondria produce much of the energy our cells use, but they also participate in signaling, oxidative balance, adaptation, and cellular decision-making.
And mitochondrial activity connects with circadian rhythms too.
So now we can trace another series of dots:
Morning light influences biological timing.
Biological timing influences hormonal signaling.
Hormones influence metabolism.
Food supplies raw materials.
Movement changes energy demand.
Mitochondria respond.
Sleep allows recovery.
Then the cycle begins again.
That’s why I keep coming back to the same idea:
The body doesn’t operate as a collection of unrelated parts.
It works through communication and coordination.

What Happens When the Signals Conflict?

Modern life creates some very strange conditions from a biological perspective.
We can sit indoors all day and barely see natural light.
We can turn on bright lights at 10:00 PM.
We can eat almost any food at any hour.
We can answer emails from bed.
We can watch something stimulating until midnight and then wonder why the brain doesn’t immediately switch off.
We can cross several time zones in one afternoon.
We can work all night and sleep during the day.
The body adapts to an incredible amount.
But adaptation still requires work.
When signals repeatedly conflict, the body needs to keep figuring out what time it really is.
That doesn’t mean modern life destroys our health.
It simply means we gain another place to look when something feels off.
Sometimes the first question doesn’t need to focus on what we need to add.
Sometimes we ask whether the body receives clear signals in the first place.

Start With Anchors, Not Perfection

I don’t want anyone reading this and thinking, “Well, now I need to wake at 6:00 AM, eat every meal at exactly the right time, avoid every screen after sunset, and go to bed at 10:00 PM.”
That misses the point completely.
People work nights.
Babies wake up.
Dogs need to go outside.
Travel happens.
Family responsibilities happen.
Life happens.
The body doesn’t need perfection.
I think it benefits from anchors.
An anchor gives the body something predictable.
Maybe you wake around the same time most mornings.
Maybe you step outside soon after waking.
Maybe you eat meals instead of grazing all day.
Maybe you walk for ten minutes after dinner.
Maybe you begin lowering the lights in the evening.
Maybe your phone stops coming to bed with you.
Maybe you protect a consistent sleep window more often than not.
One anchor may create a noticeable difference.
Then you can build from there.

Observe. Discover. Thrive.

This is where I always come back to observation.
Before changing ten things, watch what your body already tells you.
For the next week, notice:
When do you wake?
When do you first get outside?
When do you feel most alert?
When does your energy drop?
When do cravings show up?
When do you eat your last meal?
When do you finally stop working?
When do you begin feeling sleepy?
When do you actually go to bed?
And perhaps most importantly:
Do you see a pattern?
Don’t judge it.
Just notice it.
You may discover that your afternoon crash follows a morning with very little nourishment.
You may notice better sleep on days when you spend more time outdoors.
You may find that eating late leaves you feeling different the next morning.
You may notice that ten minutes of movement after dinner helps your whole evening feel calmer.
Or you may discover something completely different.
That’s the point.
Observation gives us clues.
Then we decide which clue matters enough to explore.

Before You Add Another Thing

We live in a culture that constantly tells us we need something else.
Another supplement.
Another device.
Another program.
Another hack.
Sometimes those things offer tremendous value.
But I think we miss something when we start there every time.
Before adding more, I like asking:
What does the body already need from me today?
Maybe it needs morning light.
Maybe it needs protein and nourishment.
Maybe it needs movement.
Maybe it needs a quieter evening.
Maybe it needs enough sleep.
Maybe it simply needs those things to occur with a little more consistency.
Your body keeps time whether you think about it or not.
And when we begin paying attention to those rhythms, some of the other pieces start falling into place.
That’s another dot worth connecting.
Observe. Discover. Thrive.

Try This for One Week

Choose one daily anchor.
Just one.
Step outside for morning light.
Take a short walk after a meal.
Finish eating a little earlier.
Dim the lights in the evening.
Move your phone away from the bed.
Create a more consistent waking time.
Repeat that one thing for seven days.
Then ask yourself:
What did I notice?
You may learn more from that question than from adding five new things to your routine.
